What you can do to prepare

Remember

  • Apply before you start preparing for your A-level exams, this means you can focus on your studies!
  • You can apply for student finance even if you don’t know where you’ll be living or studying
  • You can change your student finance details online anytime before the start of your course
  • If you apply for extra help such as the Childcare Grant, make sure to upload your supporting documents as soon as possible as this can sometimes take longer than usual
  • Don’t miss out on any important student finance updates, visit our student finance timeline page for key dates

Some things you should consider

  • Plan ahead for study-related costs, such as books, notepads, laptop or materials. Some courses cost more than others. Find out about understanding student living costs
  • Research different accommodation costs if you plan to move away from home, to make sure you can afford to rent where you will study
  • Budget for social events such as nights out and socialising with new friends
